Professor
Andrew Errington of the University of Plymouth in South West England first encountered the Canadian Rural
Revitalization Foundation at the October 1996 Conference on Rural Employment in Coaticook,
Quebec. Recognizing kindred spirits he maintained contact and, during a visit to Montreal
in July 1997, discovered many similarities between the approach and interests of his
Market Towns Research group and the NRE project. As these two independent research
initiatives began to bear fruit it seemed sensible to provide a link between them through
this website.
Unfortunately, Andrew
Errington passed away suddenly in November of 2003. Many of us knew
Andrew as an energetic and talented colleague and a close friend. He was
an enthusiastic supporter of our CRRF
and NRE work and made significant contributions to our understanding of
rural life. His work on farm succession brought him close to us on a
regular basis - allowing us to enjoy his company as he traveled Canada
and learn from the insights he brought from other countries. His work on
market-towns provided a host of valuable ideas and tools for examining
the interrelations between rural and urban places. I particularly
appreciated the way in which Andrew shared his knowledge and eagerly
participated in the exploration of new ideas. He was an inspiration for
me. I will miss him greatly.
