Exploring Rural Diversity in Rural Canada |
This brief examines
diversity that starts from a concern with rural revitalization. This
concern emerged from the view that rural people face significant
challenges that are devitalizing their economic and social conditions,
especially at a local level. It is wished to understand the processes
that contributed to the challenges in order to develop appropriate
long-term responses to them, rather than deal only with the outcomes in
a piece-meal fashion. |

The Informal Economy in the New
Rural Economy: A Research Proposal |
This document is
interesting mainly for its review of recent literature, the idea that agent-based
modelling appears to be a promising approach and that transactions are the unit of
observation. It is the first
draft of a research proposal for investigating the Informal Economy in the NRE. A
framework is outlined with some suggestions regarding a plan of action. It is a working
document. |

THE NEW RURAL ECONOMY: What is
it? |
The NRE is
constantly emerging as a set of new arrangements of property rights, driven especially
these days by digital technology. The implications for policy are quite fundamental. The
formal part of today's NRE seems to be retreating into an enclave of globally competitive
enterprises, embedded in an increasingly informal economy with a survivalist core. The
literature suggests that the household may be less and less suited to its
traditional role as the fundamental governing
institution for rural enterprise. |
